Fire walls and Proxies for Win95

The following are some firewall and proxy product for Windows 95. I've not used any of them, so can't comment much on any of theses applications. Some of these are shareware, or are free, but most are commercial products. Check out the various web pages and let e have any feedback you can offer: mail me!

Wingate. - this is a proxy for Win95 and is meant to be good. The latest version is Ver 3.0 and is no longer free. See http://www.deerfield.com/wingate/pricing.htm for pricing details. There are two configuration FAQs. The first and the second.

CSM Proxy- CSMProxy (which used to be knwn as Open Sesame) is a full featured proxy and caching server. A commercial product, you can download a limited 30-day trial version. Some people think this is the best product available. CSM is an Austrian company, so if you're from Europe, you might get better response from their Austrian web site

Spaghetti - Spaghetti is an HTTP and FTP caching Proxy server with capabilities of acting as a gateway for any other protocol like NNTP, SMTP, POP3 and others. It runs as an application under Windows 95 or as a service under Windows NT.

IP Route - IPRoute is PC-based router shareware for networks running the Internet Protocol (IP). It can act as a demand-dial router between your LAN and a PPP or SLIP link, and allow transparent access from your LAN to the Internet using a single IP address through network address translation (NAT). There are some setup and usage details by Eric S. Johansson and by the author.

Firedoor - This is a proxy server, intended for use in the small office or school environment, FireDoor allows a single Internet connection to be shared by any number of people simultaneously. Note: for a single user, FireDoor can be used without registration. For more than one user, a special registration key can be purchased from Equivalence.

NAT32 - Formerly known as NAT95, this is an Australian product. I have not used it. Any comments?

Rideway - this is a Windows 9x or Windows NT based proxy server. It appears cost-effective: the software is installed onto a single Windows 95/NT/98 machine and no additional hardware or software is required for the other networked computers. A new version RideWay 2.0 has just been released.

Microsoft Proxy Server V 2.0 - this product is part of Microsoft's Back Office suite and handles proxy and caching and provides great firewall capability. It is a commerical product.

Net Proxy 3 - yet another Proxy server I got mail about. I've not used it - comments welcome. This is a commerical product, but supports a single client free (that would give you two systems accessing the internet, whch may be useful).

WinRoute - Another Proxy/NAT product I've not used. Latest version is 3.04 and comes in two flabours: Pro and Lite. The Pro version provides NAT, Firewall, Mail Server, Cache-Proxy, DHCP Server, DNS Server. The Lite version is a little more basic. This chart provides some comparisons with other products. Both Pro and Lite versions offer a free 30-day trial.
